Do’s and Don’ts: Tips for Talking about End-of-Life Care

Talking about end-of-life care can be uncomfortable, awkward and sad, but it is extremely important for anyone who will be functioning as a power of attorney in the future to understand their loved one's wishes for the end of their life.

We’ve put together this short guide of do’s and don’ts to help break the ice and get started with this critical and often glossed-over subject.

DO Find Somewhere Comfortable to Talk - You’ll want to bring this conversation up in an environment where everyone feels comfortable, like around the kitchen table.

DON’T Rush the Conversation - It is important that everyone has enough time to speak their mind and talk freely, so be sure that there aren’t any time constraints when you go to begin the conversation.

DO Include Everyone Involved - Gather together everyone who will be part of the final decisions as much as possible. This may include friends, family members, caregivers, doctors, clergy and anyone else who will have a role to play in end-of-life care. It’s best to gather as many people together as possible rather than play telephone later with important information.

DON’T Make it Contentious - While you may have a specific idea of how you’d like to handle things when the time comes, your loved one’s wishes are what is most important. Be prepared to put your ego aside and listen with an open mind.

DO Leave Things on a Positive Note - While this can be an uncomfortable topic, the goal of these important conversations is to be empowered if and when the need arises. You can find peace that all of the important players are on the same page and you have put together a plan that will honor your loved one’s final wishes.

DON’T Have Just One Conversation - There are many pieces that come into play when planning for end-of-life care, like assigning a power of attorney and finalizing your living will. Make sure that all necessary legal documentation has been completed in advance and don’t be afraid to make adjustments over time if things change.
