7 Summer Skin Care Tips for Seniors
We’re all for enjoying the fun in the sun that summer has in store — and that important daily dose of Vitamin D! But, especially for seniors, it’s imperative to practice sun-exposure safety. Read on for seven tips for how to stay safe in the sun:
- Limit your exposure.
The sun’s rays are strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so plan outdoor activities for early mornings or late afternoons, whenever possible.
- Wear sunscreen daily. Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of at least 15. Reapply every two hours, especially if exercising or otherwise exerting yourself. Pay special attention to your face, hands, feet, head and lips. Consider using a sunscreen designed specifically for your face to avoid irritation.
- Stay in the shade.
Beyond staying in the shade of tents or trees, wear a hat and sunglasses or use an umbrella. Consider wearing clothing with a high UPF rating for extra coverage.
- Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Keep water close at hand to stay hydrated throughout the day. Eating light foods with high water content, such as zucchini, celery, tomatoes, spinach and broccoli, can also help.
- Wear insect repellant.
Wear insect repellant to avoid the irritation of bites and stings and the skin damage caused by scratching bites.
- Be aware of sun-sensitive reactions.
Some medications cause increased sensitivity to the sun and heat. They can contribute to dehydration, worsen sunburn and cause rashes.
- Protect your skin and hair from chlorine. Swimming is a fantastic, low-impact workout; but the chlorine used to keep harmful bacteria at bay can strip your skin and hair of its natural oils. Rinse off in fresh water after swimming and be sure to wash your swimsuit between each use.
