How Telehealth is Improving Care for Seniors

Technology has vastly improved many elements of our modern life and medical care is no exception. Many doctors now offer telehealth appointments which ensure people have access to care no matter the circumstances. These phone and video calls allow patients to receive care and be monitored by their doctor in a more comfortable environment without other barriers to care.

What is Telehealth?

Telehealth is commonly accessed by seniors and caregivers in the comfort of the patient’s home by using a computer, cell phone or tablet. These remote appointments give patients access to doctors who may otherwise be inaccessible due to the patient’s lack of transportation or limited mobility. You can even have an appointment with a specialist in an entirely different state!

Telehealth appointments have seen a rise in popularity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as they make it possible to maintain necessary appointments without risk of exposing the patient to others. These appointments became a lifeline for seniors who may have experienced a lapse in care during the lockdowns. By meeting with their doctor virtually it allowed seniors to maintain their required appointments and a sense of social normalcy.

Other Benefits of Telehealth

  • Less time commuting to appointments
  • Less wait time to see your doctor
  • Enhanced ability to live independently
  • Minimizes time spent in hospitals and doctors offices

Is Telehealth covered by my insurance?

Many insurance providers, including Medicare and Medicaid, are beginning to cover telehealth services! Of course, it is best to check with your provider for specific coverage details before scheduling an appointment.
