Setting Boudaries as a Caregiver

Setting Boudaries as a Caregiver

Taking care of a friend or family member in need is a noble act, but it’s not without its difficulties. Astudy by the AARP found that 40% of caregivers experience high levels of stress, with another 28% feeling moderate levels of stress, which highlights just how important it is to set boundaries as a caregiver.

By setting boundaries and seeking
home care assistance, caregivers can ensure that they have the mental, physical, and emotional capacity to be there for their loved ones on a long-term basis. In this post, we’ll outline some handy tips that can help to mitigate caregiver stress.

Know The Signs of Caregiver Stress

It’s much easier to manage caregiver stress when it’s at the earliest stage, rather than waiting until the pressure becomes too much to handle. If you’re providing care for a loved one, then make yourself aware of the signs of caregiver stress. If you begin to notice that you may be suffering, then you’ll know that it’s time to take action.

Some
symptoms of caregiver stress include:

  • Exhaustion
  • Resentment
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • A sense of obligation.

It’s OK to feel these things on occasion, but if they become frequent experiences, then something will need to change.

How to Set Boundaries as a Caregiver

The best way to combat caregiver stress is to set boundaries. After all, it’s not as if you want to give up caring for your loved one, you just want to also ensure that you’re happy doing so — and it’s boundaries that will allow you to do just that.

Be Aware of Your Needs

You’ll be acutely aware of your loved one’s needs, but are you aware of your own? As the old saying goes, you can’t pour water from an empty cup. By making sure that your own needs are being met, you’ll be helping to bring some balance to your life while also giving yourself the strength to provide support.

Some methods for improving your overall well-being include:

  • Eating healthy meals, three times a day.
  • Exercising multiple times a week.
  • Engaging with hobbies and activities that bring you joy.

Recognize That It’s Difficult

Some caregivers believe that they have to radiate joy at all times, or that they must feel guilty if they begin to feel a little worn out from providing care. Instead, accept that there are good and bad elements to providing care, and allow yourself to feel the negative emotions as and when they arise.

Get Support From Others

You’re providing support to a loved one, but you should also be receiving support from others, too. There are online communities of caregivers where you can seek guidance and help, and it’s also recommended to reach out to your own support network, too.

Remember: Caregiver Boundaries Are a Necessity, Not a Luxury

Caregivers are not selfish for setting boundaries. It’s an essential part of the task.
