How Practicing Gratitude Can Help Caregivers
Being a caregiver, while rewarding, can be an incredibly stressful job at times. It is easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day challenges, grief, and frustration that naturally come with caring for another person, especially if it is a loved one. Caregivers are often so wired to take care of others it can be challenging for them to shift focus and find their own things to be thankful for in times of stress.
With Thanksgiving around the corner, there is no better time to recenter and try practicing gratitude in your everyday life.
What does practicing gratitude mean for caregivers?
Of course, it is wonderful to show the caregivers in your life appreciation for all of their hard work. However, what we are suggesting is a form of self-reflection that a caregiver can do to focus their energy on the positives in their day-to-day.
How can a caregiver practice gratitude?
The easiest way to get started is to dedicate 5 minutes a day to personal reflection. Here are a few topics that we recommend focusing on:
- What is something that happened today that made you smile?
- What are you most grateful for at this moment?
- What is something challenging that you overcame recently and who helped you most?
- What are you looking forward to?
You can write down your answers in a journal, on a piece of paper that you keep in a jar, or even a note on your phone. By writing down your answers you are giving yourself a record of happy memories to reference in times of particular hardship or stress.
All caregivers - even those who consider themselves to have a “glass half full” mentality - can benefit from this exercise. By taking some time each day to recognize the best parts of being a caregiver you will reduce your own stress and, in turn, be a better caregiver.
