November is National Family Caregivers Month

While November is known for being the month of Thanksgiving, it is also widely recognized as National Family Caregivers Month. According to a recent report published by AARP regarding caregiving in 2020 to adults 50 years and older, 89% of caregivers are related to those who they are caring for. Caregivers are selfless and compassionate in their desire to help another person navigate everyday tasks that may be challenging based on age or disability. This is especially true of family caregivers who are typically not compensated for their time or efforts.

In honor of National Family Caregivers Month, now is a great time to show appreciation for the caregiver (or caregivers) in your life. Here are a few ways that seniors can show their gratitude towards those who go above and beyond every day:

  1. With a small gift - If you have the means, a small token of appreciation like flowers or their favorite candy is a great way to bring a smile to your caregiver’s face. It is important that you don’t put yourself in any undue financial hardship in order to give a flashy or extravagant gift. It’s truly the thought that counts.

  2. Offer time off - If you are able to, find someone else to fill in on their normal tasks for a few days. While this might not be possible in every situation, a little break for some well deserved “me” time goes a long way to help caregivers refresh and feel appreciated.

  3. Write a note - Take some time to write a heartfelt note or card telling your loved one how much you appreciate everything they’ve done for you. Not only does this show you have been thinking of them, but it is also a keepsake that they will treasure for years to come.

  4. Simply say “Thank You” - The smallest gestures can often be the most meaningful. Be sure to say thank you for all the hard work and sacrifices that your caregiver has made for you. Even though they know their work is appreciated, hearing “thank you” can mean more than anything.

Another way that you can show appreciation to your family caregiver is by researching home care options. Caregiving can be a full-time job, even though most caregivers are balancing a full-time job in addition to the care they provide.
