How to Celebrate Father’s Day with the Senior in Your Life

Father’s Day is just around the corner, so it’s time to begin thinking about how to celebrate the influential father figure(s) in your life. Mother’s Day tends to receive all of the attention, so a little extra forethought here can go a long way.

  • Go out. Father’s Day is a great excuse to plan an outing! What are his favorite things to do? This may call for a round of golf, a picnic at the park or a visit to a nearby museum.

  • Stay in. Focus on your loved one’s favorite activities. Would he love to fire up the grill and invite the kids over for a backyard barbecue? Could you help him host a poker night to play Texas Hold ’em with his buddies? He may want to simply enjoy a screening of his favorite Western over a delicious home-cooked meal.

  • Give a thoughtful gift. Don’t settle for just any ol’ tie. Help him bulk up his music collection with his favorite old tunes on MP3 (or vinyl!). If he’s an avid reader, choose the next novel on his list. For history buffs, search for a documentary he’s yet to see or a limited-edition atlas or reference guide.

  • Celebrate from afar. Not all families are able to get together for Father’s Day. Schedule a video call to chat face-to-face. Especially for grandfathers, it’s a good time to comb through photo albums and share stories.

  • Be aware of the many emotions surrounding Father’s Day. The holiday can evoke a wide range of emotions, from joy to grief. Many senior men may be redefining their identity, either from embracing the role of grandfather (or great-grandfather) or grappling with physical or mental limitations related to aging. For those who’ve experienced loss, it may be a reminder of memories with that loved one.

No matter how you plan to celebrate, we wish you a love-filled June 18. Reply to this email to share with us what you have up your sleeves!
